Why Do We Require Credit Cards?

Many people have noticed recently that we have started requiring a credit card in order to hold a reservation.  This has lead to a number of questions as to why that is, as well as some outright indignation from people who feel as though we are trying to tell them they cannot be trusted.  Let us reassure you, it has nothing to do with us not trusting you!  Our system recently went through several updates, and now it requires a valid credit card in order to book any appointments, including from existing guests of our, even those we have seen for years!

The major reason that the industry has made it a standard practice to have a card on file for booking is that many people do not realize the impact on their designer if they simply don’t show up.  Most salons and spas require 24-hour or greater notice of cancellation.  This is because our designers are booking out about three weeks in advance on average.  If a guest books a color or chemical service – which can be upwards of three hours, and hundreds of dollars – and then does not show up, not only is that three or more hours worth of appointments the designer could otherwise have accommodated, but it’s almost an entire day’s worth of pay that they are now out.

For most people, it doesn’t seem like a big deal if they just miss an appointment, because they don’t see what goes on behind the chair, or behind the massage table.  The designers and technicians who service you are only paid for the services they perform.  This means that if they take a cancellation last minute, or if someone simply doesn’t show up, and they therefore have to turn other clients away for the time you have reserved them, they lose out on a huge chunk of their income.

This is why we also have our 24-hour cancellation policy.  We require our guests to let us know by 7:00 pm the night before their appointment if they need to change or cancel their reservation.  If a client simply does not show up, especially without notice, they are charged the full cost of the service for which they were scheduled.  This is never done out of malice, but it is unfair to the designer and to their other guests if a “no call, no show” happens, and we need to hold people accountable.

Henna - How Safe Is It Really?

By now, you’ve probably heard people talking about Henna as an all natural, safe hair dye.  But when we actually look at what is being sold as Henna hair dye, and how safe and healthy it really is, what are we finding?

Henna has been used for thousands of years by women (and men) in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and the Mediterranean for dyeing both hair and skin.  Typically Henna dyes hair a shade of red, depending on the hair’s starting color.  It penetrates the hair shaft, but not the cortex, so it doesn’t change anything about the structure of the hair.  However, because results vary from head to head, the results are entirely unpredictable.  If you already have highlights or roots, the Henna will simply lay over that, and you will have different shades of henna, instead of a consistent and even color.  Furthermore, if you use traditional, synthetic dyes after coloring your hair with Henna, it can seriously damage your hair, and the color can be dramatically altered in unpredictable ways.

Henna is a plant-based dye, so most people consider it to be safe and all natural.  However, what most stores sell as Henna hair dye is completely unregulated by the FDA, and can have any number of added chemicals, salts, and other ingredients that can both damage your hair, and result in an off the wall color you didn’t intend.  Black Henna is not a real thing, and is frequently marketed as safe and natural, but is really just a bunch of added chemicals that you have to hope will come out as intended.  There can also be all kinds of unregulated ingredients that cause irritation, allergic reactions, and painful scalp problems.

In this blogger’s recounting of her experience with Henna, she discusses just how messy and inconsistent Henna can be.  The fact that Henna has been used for thousands of years to pigment or dye skin as well should factor into your thought process, and if you decide to use Henna to dye your hair, be very careful about any that gets on your skin.

Lush Cosmetics has one of the most popular brands of Henna hair dye on the market, which is what this particular blogger used for her hair.  Not only did she need to sit in the shower to apply the Henna – due to the amount of mess there was – but she was told to leave it on her hair for up to 6 hours!  That is a lot of time to have your hair wrapped in plastic.

So before you get too excited about Henna hair dye, think about how quickly you may want to change your hair color to something other than red, what brand you’re using and how regulated it is, and how much you’re willing to deal with unpredictability in your color.
